NEW CAFES YOU CAN WALK TO FROM SINGAPORE-JOHOR BAHRU CUSTOMS, MALAYSIA

by - Monday, January 23, 2017

All you cafe hoppers should be well aware by now of the numerous cafes and eateries sprouting around Johor Bahru (JB) City Square in Malaysia. For the unfamiliar, JB City Square is considered a little one-day getaway for many Singaporeans to Malaysia and is one of the shopping malls in JB from which Singaporeans love to congregate at for shopping or dining due to the stronger Singapore: Malaysia exchange rates.
So for those who are not keen on shopping, there is this little area just outside the mall — along Jalan Dhoby area you can explore for a sub-culture expereince.

Need 3G SIM Card data to search for the places on the go?

In addition to my first compilation in 2014 where I had listed other eateries within walking distance from JB City Square  this post is an update, which sees the opening of brand new eateries, attracted by the influx of Singaporeans who readily made their way there for shopping and dining.
Who knows?
There might be more versions in the future too. But below are 7 places you should check out.
***

1. Shakespeare Milkshake

Shakespear's in town! Right in Johor Bahru in fact is this stylish cafe serving modern sweets and coffee for the young and hip. The interior spells minimalistic in clean white and wood elements, perfect for a photo.

 Our Order

Kinder Shake RM16
This photogenic milkshake has been photoed a number of times by Instagrammers.
A mix of chocolate, kinder, milk and crunchy peanuts on the side. Creamy, rich shake to cool down under the hot sun. As good as it looks.
You get the idea.

Ham Croffle RM8
We marvelled at how innovative this was. Looking like a waffle cone, it is anything but.
Guess what? As the name spells, it's a croissant in fact, sandwiched with ham and melty mozzarella cheese. Afterwhich, the croissant was pressed by a waffle-maker producing the appearance below!
Results? crispy flakiness that makes for a good snack!

Visit:

9, Jalan Trus
Johor Bahru 80000

2. Flowers In The Window

Just across the road from The Replacement is this garden-themed cafe with its beautiful concept on flora and fauna. Spotting over a two-storey space. We ordered the below (scroll down) and found them to be mediocre. Perhaps we should have ordered a "cooked" dish, not something cold and assembled. The food did not left much of an impression.

Hygiene

The 'vintage' furniture around the cafe, though they were supposed to convey a sense of yesteryears, does not seemed to be maintained or cleaned. We spotted broken cupboards doors, dusty glass panels. Shouldn't the cleaning be on par?
I went to the toilet and the condition was horrible. Wet and dirty floor with chocked basins, you get the idea.
Toilets pretty much reflect the hygiene standard of an eatery, no?

Interior

The centrepiece has got to be this poster wall with its quirkiness and all which warrants so much curiosity from cafe hoppers for a visit.

Our Order

Spinach Quiche RM15
It was really simple and didn't warrant much excitement unfortunately

Salmon Salad RM 24
Fair mediocre though pretty on presentation.

I would say the interior was pretty magical and quirky and still worth a visit. For food ordering, choose something that needs whipping up from the stove instead of cold dishes.
Let me know what else is good in the comments below if you have to Flowers in the Window before?

9 Jalan Dohby, 811000 Johor Bahru

3. Amphawa Boat Noodle

We stumbled upon this shop and did a double take when we saw an indoor waterfall! What a picturesque sight.
The ambience was cosy enough for a long stay and though we were pretty filled up by then we decided to give a shot at their boat noodles which were priced really cheap at RM1.90

Roamed to 2nd level for a bird's eyes view.

Our Order

We had 3 different flavors of their renowned boat noodles — Amphawa Chicken Boat Noodle, Rangsit Chicken Boat Noodle and Tom Yam Prawn Noodle RM1.90 each.
We totally 'heart' the boat noodle in the different flavors but the former two tasted similer akin to the dark sauce and on the sweeter side.  However, if you are keen something more hot and spicy, I will recommend you to zoom in straight for the Tom Yam Prawn Noodle which was really "shiok" ( Singapore slang for great satisfaction).
Fish Cake RM11.90
was crispy and complimentary to the chili dip.
Thai food at its best, really. For reasonable prices and cooling ambience.
We will be back for more thai food.

Visit:

No.32, Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Bandar Johor Bahru

4. The Replacement Lodge (Update)

This clean, minimalistic cafe has been one of the long standing ones and is still enjoying strong crowds. Since our earliest patronising in Jan 2016 when the cafe first opened, we recently dropped back to the cafe and noticed quite some changes in particular to the seating and display arrangement. To welcome and accommodate more customers, more chairs and tables have been packed in replacing the once-spacious, opulent layout. Of course, that is understandable. Have a look at how beautiful The Replacement looks like at the beginning.

It's good for the business, to have a healthy stream of customers flowing in and we saw plenty of that, with queues in line constantly.

Besides the attractive interior, the food has to be just as awesome for returns. We headed back and the food did not disappoint. The quality and standard has definitely been sustained and well worth the pricing.

Our Orders

This time we had our cuppas and some snacks.

Bnb French Toast RM18.90
Crispy bacon and banana slices caramelized for a sweet, savory combi topped with vanilla ice cream and crispy toast drizzled with honey and we have a perfect breakfast combo.

Flavored Latte RM11-12 each
We had our Latte in rose flavor.
Medium-bodied and aromatic with hints of rose.

You will not miss the visible queue at its doors on weekends. As its name suggests lodging services are available too and from the photos, they look clean and sleek. Pretty good choice if you wish to stay near to a centralised location in JB.

Visit:

33 - 34, Jalan Dhoby
Johor Bahru 80000

5. Tokyo Secret

With our fascination with everything cheesey, guess (Singaporean) foodies were particularly delighted to hear about the news of yet (another) well-known Japanese cheese tart brand opened right across Singapore causeway.
Located right smacked inside City Square, this store saw some queues but no worries, the waiting time was fairly fast in about 10 minutes. No seatings only takeaway.

Packed in a really pretty bag but pity we had no use for it and threw away. Else, perfect as a gift.

Our Order

Harajuku Cheese Tart RM7.90, Matcha Cheese Tart RM8.90 and White Chocolate (Seasonal) RM 8.90
To enjoy the best expereince, have it immediately while the tarts are hot. If you were to bring home, store in the fridge and heat up before eating or have it cold.

While the original tasted good and practically melts in your mouth with the soft cheese, the matcha was pretty special and had an inner layer of mochi surprise. Worth a try!
The white chocolate was not really engaging and tasted like a chocolate tart instead of cheese.

Visit:

Lot MS-03, Level 4, Johor Bahru City Square,
Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Darul Ta'zim, Bandar Johor Bahru

6. Koone

Missed this pink parlour in my recent JB trip, hope to be there to try out their pretty soft serve soon. They open pretty late though, but meanwhile hop on by if you are around the area.

Pin For Later~

 Generic Directions

All the above cafes mentioned are easily accessible from JB City Square ( connected via Singapore to JB customs) simply by walking on foot. Exit from City Square Office Tower (look for City Square Level 1 McDonalds and walk straight towards the office tower) and head to Jalan Dhoby area. Once there, you will spot many eateries and cafes.
Have a filling foodie day exploring the interesting eats in Johor Bahru!

  4. I had been to Singapore last year and we had plans to visit JB but due to time constraints we couldnt make it. I loved the milkshake, looks so yummy. The best thing about this article is you have mentioned about the hotel directions, prices and map which is very important piece of info for any traveller.
